The stage was set for the stepladder finals of the elite Masters event at Northcliff Bowl this morning as bowlers from all eleven teams that have been competing in Johannesburg this week joined a large crowd of spectators to see who would become the VII CTBC Masters champions.

ENGLAND WITHSTANDS DETERMINED CHALLENGE TO WIN GOLD IN MIXED DOUBLES

England’s strong finish in the Men’s Doubles on Tuesday afternoon spurred the duo of Becky Day and Elliot Crosby into another impressive start to the Mixed Doubles event. The pair shot lines of 489, 522 and 459 to hold an overnight lead ahead of Malaysia’s B Squad players Shalin Zulkifli and Timmy Tan, and A Squad pair of Siti Amirah and Mohd Nur Aiman.

As previous hosts of the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, and the WTBA World Championships in 2003, the MTBC and Sunway Megalanes have demonstrated their expertise and ideal facilities to stage major international events, and we are confident that this experience guarantees a successful Championship on behalf of the CTBF. Belfast will host the fourth Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championships
The competition, to be staged at the Dundonald International Ice Bowl from 24 – 30 November, is being hosted by the Northern Ireland Tenpin Bowling Federation. Competitors from 16 Commonwealth countries – including a number of reigning world champions – are expected to take part in the Championships, which previously has been held in Scotland, Australia and Cyprus. Each team is made up of four bowlers, and Northern Ireland’s team is made up of Dundonald’s Karen Payne and Billy Nimick and Londonderry’s Lynda Watson and Kevin Horton. The Championships is being sponsored by Belfast City Council, together with the Dundonald International Ice Bowl, Castlereagh Borough Council, Sport Northern Ireland, the British Tenpin Bowling Association, QubicaAMF, Holiday Inn Belfast, Discover Ireland and FonaCab. Joining the Northern Ireland team at the Dundonald International Ice Bowl, the High Sheriff of Belfast, Councillor Margaret McKenzie, pointed to the province’s growing international reputation for hosting successful sporting events. “In recent years, we have hosted a diverse range of international sporting competitions, from the World Cross Country Championships to the World Amateur Boxing Championships, the Fencing Commonwealth Games and the Women’s World Open Squash Championship to last year’s IRB Under 19 World Championship. This year promises to be just as eventful, with not just one but three major international competitions – the World One Armed Golf Championships at Dunmurry in June, the World Blind Golf Championships at Belvoir Park in August and the Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championships here at Dundonald in November. Of course, we cannot stage major competitions like these without partnerships, and I am delighted the Belfast City Council has been able to work with our neighbours in Castlereagh to bring these Commonwealth Championships to Northern Ireland.” The Mayor of Castlereagh, Councillor Myreve Chambers, added: “Castlereagh Borough Council is delighted to be staging another prestigious bowling event at Dundonald International Ice Bowl. The facility has previously hosted many major bowling events, including a number of junior, adult and senior Triple Crowns, which were eagerly contended by teams across the British Isles and Republic of Ireland, as well the unforgettable AMF Bowling World Cup which saw more than 70 teams across the globe competing for the title. We have every hope that the Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship will be as successful, and we look forward to working with both Belfast City Council and the Northern Ireland Tenpin Bowling Federation to ensure that every participant and their supporters have an enjoyable visit.” Billy Beattie, President of the Northern Ireland Tenpin Bowling Federation, said they were looking forward to competing on their home lanes. “This is a great opportunity for Northern Ireland to promote tenpin bowling as a Commonwealth sport, and the chance to host a very prestigious event. The Dundonald International Ice Bowl hosted the AMF Bowling World Cup in 1996.

III Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championships ~ July 2006
	The III Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship, to be staged midyear in Melbourne, Australia, has already attracted entries from 15 Commonwealth countries. National Federations from all three Zones of the sport will send teams of two men and two women to compete in the 2006 event that will be hosted by Tenpin Bowling Australia on behalf of the Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Federation.

II Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championships ~ February 2005 Held in Paphos, Cyprus. Paphos is an area so diverse one cannot get enough of it. A thriving coastal city situated on the southwest coast of Cyprus with a population of 65.000. Ancient legend tells us that this was the home of Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty. Mountain villages, crystal clear waters, sandy beaches, and beautiful landscapes all bathed in the healthiest year round climate in the Mediterranean, with 340 days of wonderful sunshine. Paphos has two bowling centres. The Championships will take place at the Cosmic Bowling Centre.

Cross-Sport Welcome functions held in Bendigo and Melbourne Two "friendly" matches between the Scotland Institute of Sport Swim Team and local bowlers from the City of Bendigo and Chadstone in suburban Melbourne last week highlighted the uniqueness of the sport of tenpin bowling and the hospitality of its players. Where could 20 of Scotland’s top Swimmers find themselves in an arena with no water, no starting gun and no finishing line, yet still be able to compete and have fun – as individuals and as a team? Where else but a tenpin bowling centre! On Wednesday, Dragon City Lanes in Bendigo was the venue for the first of two social functions hosted by the sport’s national governing body, Tenpin Bowling Australia. Bendigo Mayor, Cr. Rod Fyffe and Commonwealth Youth Games Director, Michelle Pryde, joined local bowlers and officials in welcoming the visiting Scottish squad. Cr. Fyffe remarked on the special bonds of friendship that grow between athletes irrespective of their sport when linked with a common bond. Swimming and Tenpin Bowling are two of the ten sports recently announced by the Australian Commonwealth Games Association as part of the program for the 2004 Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Bendigo in November, 2004 .........more
